A new campaign has been launched on electrical safety in the private
rented sector.

The campaign 'Keep Renting Safe' has been launched by the National
Private Tenants Organisation (NPTO). There is a dedicated website for
the campaign at http://KeepRentingSafe.weebly.com
(wlmailhtml:{15C8B870-7878-4919-B7A3-B9885EFADD8C}mid://00000299/!x-usc:mailto:KeepRentingSafe@gmail.com).

The campaign calls for mandatory periodic inspection and testing of
electrical appliances and installations in all private rented homes
and a competent persons scheme for inspectors. In addition the
campaign calls for tenants to receive copies of inspection reports and
encourages landlords to have consumer units with RCDs installed.

A spokesman for NPTO said; "It is intolerable that gas appliances and
installations have to receive annual safety checks by law but
electrical installations and appliances do not. Energy Performance
Certificates are a legal requirement too but not vital inspections of electrical
installations and appliances, it does not make sense."
